Shannon Van Sant

Shannon is a journalist with NPR News. She has spent more than a decade as a reporter and documentary filmmaker, filing stories primarily on poverty alleviation and human rights throughout Asia and Africa, where she worked for PBS television and CBS News. In 2011 Amnesty International honored Shannon with a Human Rights Press Award for her reporting. After moving overseas, Shannon first filmed documentaries for CCTV, Chinese state television, on economic development. In this capacity, she reported from 20 Chinese provinces on poverty, rural health care, and education. In total, Shannon has directed 18 documentaries, and her reporting and analysis have been featured on CBS News; The Economist; The New York Times; The Wall Street Journal; Politico; the PBS NewsHour; PBS Nightly Business Report; the BBC and CNN. She began her journalism career in New York at ABC News.
